KUALA LUMPUR, 26 June 2023 – The Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) today signed the Declaration of Corruption-Free Pledge with Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). The ceremony marked a milestone in the organisation commitment to fostering awareness and adherence to anti-corruption practices as it took a significant step towards promoting better governance and integrity culture
within its organisation.
The pledge was formally signed by MRC Secretary-General, Haji Hakim Hamzah, in the presence of MACC Community Education Division Director, Datuk Razim Mohd Noor.
Haji Hakim Hamzah said, “This pledge further represents our unwavering dedication to adhere to the highest standards of operation ethics, combating corruption and set a precedent for others to follow. We want to foster awareness among the organisation’s leadership, employees and members on the importance of practising noble values and inculcating integrity as a responsibility of a
humanitarian volunteer”.
“Trust has been one of the MRC’s key assets for more than 75 years in Malaysia. It is therefore in the MRC’s own interest to uphold this trust and to reaffirm its commitment against corruption. Any form of corruption, whether active or passive, can jeopardise the trust of the public, donors, and members, as well as the people entrusted to the MRC as an impartial humanitarian organisation”.
As a humanitarian organisation, the MRC adheres to high standards of operation ethics and demonstrates our commitment to responsible stewardship of humanitarian funds, which is crucial for maintaining the trust and support of donors and the communities. Since 2021, MRC has managed over RM37million of funds in supporting various humanitarian efforts in Malaysia and overseas.
This includes practicing transparency in our procurement and tender process. We ensure that the process is open and accessible to all potential vendors, reduces the risk of corruption and favoritism, encourages competition, leading to better value for money and improved public trust.
“This pledge is also aligned to our seven Fundamental Principles (humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality) that express the values and practices of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and served as both a guide for action and a common identity for our Movement.”
“We strongly urge upon other businesses, organisations and individuals to join us in taking this stand against corruption. We trust that by working together, we can foster an environment of transparency, accountability and fairness that will drive sustainable growth and prosperity for all,” concluded Haji Hakim.
