MALAYSIAN RED CRESCENT HOSTS CLIMATE CHANGE FORUM 2024: SHAPING RESILIENCE IN MALAYSIA

KUALA LUMPUR, 8 February 2024 – The Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) supported by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is delighted to organise the Climate Change Forum 2024: Shaping Resilience in Malaysia held at the MRC National Headquarters today.

As a nation rich in diverse ecosystems, Malaysia is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Recognising the critical need for collective action, the Climate Change Forum 2024 serves as a vital platform for stakeholders to delve into the latest research findings, discuss vulnerabilities and formulate strategies for resilience.

The panel composition for the forum includes representatives from MRC, IFRC and key Government agencies such as the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) and the Ministry of Health (KKM).

Among the participants of the forum are embassies, environmental agencies, research institutions, universities, donors and supporters particularly those related to climate change.

The forum features a comprehensive examination of Malaysia’s climate dynamics based on research conducted between 2022 and 2023. Through its panel discussions, keynote speeches and interactive sessions, participants gain insights into the specific vulnerabilities and risks faced by the country, while exploring innovative solutions for sustainable development and climate resilience.

Key Outcomes of the Forum:

As an auxiliary to the government under Parliament Act 540, the MRC plays a pivotal role in promoting
community resilience and sustainable development initiatives aimed at addressing climate change
challenges. Recognising the significant threats posed by climate change to the well-being and resilience of Malaysian communities, the MRC actively collaborates with Government agencies and other stakeholders to mitigate and adapt to its impacts. Effort includes establishment of the Climate Change Technical Working Group with its partners and other relevant agencies. This technical working group aims to spearhead research, advocacy efforts, and the implementation of climate-resilient programs to support vulnerable communities in Malaysia and beyond.
