The Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) has contributed RM 1.1 million to the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) as part of additional funding to aid recovery efforts following the earthquake that hit parts of Syria and Turkiye on February 6, 2023.
This donation reflects the generosity of the Malaysian public, with contributions gathered from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Malaysia, corporate entities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), humanitarian partners, and individual donors since the disaster occurred.
The symbolic cheque presentation took place on October 25, 2024, in Geneva, Switzerland, between Her Royal Highness Dato’ Seri DiRaja Tan Sri Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz Binti Almarhum Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah, Chairperson of MRC, and Khaled Hboubati, President of SARC. The event was witnessed by Alexander Matheou, the Asia Pacific Regional Director of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).
Previously, MRC has continuously provided assistance to SARC, supplying food and essential items such as tents, thermal blankets, sleeping bags, and medical equipment through collaboration with the Royal Malaysian Air Force.
This earthquake, deemed the worst in 20 years, resulted in significant destruction, claiming 55,000 lives and leaving hundreds of thousands in urgent need of support. MRC is dedicated to continuing its humanitarian efforts alongside global partners to help affected communities rebuild their lives.
