MYANMAR EARTHQUAKE RELIEF

MALAYSIAN RED CRESCENT LAUNCHES EMERGENCY APPEAL FOR MYANMAR EARTHQUAKE RELIEF

KUALA LUMPUR, 4 April 2025 — The Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) has launched an emergency appeal to support communities affected by the recent devastating earthquake that struck Myanmar on 29 March 2025. The powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake, followed by immediate aftershocks measuring 6.4 magnitude has left a trail of destruction with at least 3,085 casualties and 4,589 people injured.

The disaster has affected millions, damaging vital infrastructure such as historic bridges, universities and heritage sites. Hundreds remain trapped under rubble with search and rescue operations ongoing.

The Myanmar Red Cross Society with the support of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and Movement partners, is working tirelessly to address the immediate needs on the ground. Dedicated volunteers and staff are delivering life-saving first aid, conducting search and rescue operations, and transporting injured individuals to hospitals.

As a member of the IFRC alongside 190 other National Societies, MRC reaffirms its commitment to working hand in hand with its Movement partners to support communities in need. The spirit of solidarity and collective action remains central to our efforts in addressing this humanitarian crisis. MRC stands ready to mobilise its volunteers and staff, provide emergency funding and extend assistance to the most affected areas.

In collaboration with the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), MRC will support NADMA’s humanitarian aid mission by contributing 3 tonnes of relief items as part of a total 15-tonne shipment. The MRC aid includes kitchen sets, hygiene kits, blankets, mosquito nets and other essential supplies to fulfil the urgent needs of earthquake victims.

In addition, the MRC support NADMA’s initiative by working closely with the Myanmar Red Cross Society and the IFRC to coordinate the reception of aid upon arrival in Myanmar and ensure the effective distribution of relief to those most in need.

Dato’ Danial Iskandar Abdul Rahman, MRC Secretary General said, “In these challenging times, let us come together in solidarity to support those enduring unimaginable loss and hardship due to the earthquake in Myanmar. The Malaysian Red Crescent remains unwavering in our commitment to assist affected communities with humanity and compassion, no matter the circumstances. We call upon the generosity of the public, donors and partners to stand with the people of Myanmar. Your contributions will make a real difference in saving lives, providing medical aid and restoring hope and dignity to families affected by this disaster.”

MRC calls on the public, corporate partners and community organisations to come forward and support the relief efforts. Donations can be made to the official MRC account at:
